Biography

The Hon. Cynthia Pillsbury Smith is a judge for the Napa County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2017. She filled the vacancy created by the Hon. Francisca P. Tisher (Ret.).

She is a registered Democrat.

Judge Smith received her B.A from Stanford University in 1983. She went on to earn her J.D. from the University of California, Davis School of Law in 1998.

Smith began her legal career in private practice. She practiced as an associate at Herdell and Yost LLP from 1998 to 2001 and with Stein and Smith LLP from 2001 to 2002. She was named a partner at Stein and Smith in 2003. Two years later Smith became a shareholder at Clement, Fitzpatrick, and Kenworthy, where she practiced briefly before then joining Coombs and Dunlap LLP as of counsel in 2006. Smith was named a partner with the firm in 2008 and would remain there until her appointment to the bench in 2017.

While on the bench, Judge Smith has served as a Supervising Judge for both the Family and Juvenile Divisions. She has also presided in the Appellate Division.

Her memberships have included the American Inns of Court, the Napa County Bar Association, the California Bar Association, the California Women Lawyers Association, the Napa County Women Lawyers, and the American Bar Association.

Smith also served as President of the St. Helena Unified School District Board of Trustees for three years and served on the board for seven years.
