Biography

The Hon. Christopher S. Romanyshyn is a judge for the Essex County Superior Court (Vicinage 5) in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Christie on January 1, 2017.

Romanyshyn has held assignments in the Family Division (2017 to 2020) and the Criminal Division (2020 to present).

Prior to his appointment, Romanyshyn served as the Assistant Attorney General and Deputy Director for the Division of Criminal Justice of the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office (2013 to 2017). He was tasked with supervising both the Gangs and Organized Crime Bureau and the Specialized Crimes Bureau. He also served as the attorney general’s electronic surveillance counsel. Before that, he was a deputy attorney general in the Labor Prosecutions Bureau and the Gangs and Organized Crime Bureau.

Romanyshyn earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Fairfield University in 1992. He then completed a J.D. at Seton Hall Law School in 1995. He is admitted to practice in New York, New Jersey, and the District of Columbia.

After graduating from law school, Romanyshyn entered into private practice, working as an associate at Keenan, Powers & Andrews in New York City and Morristown. During his tenure there, he specialized in insurance defense litigation.

Raised in Verona, New Jersey, Romanyshyn attended Verona High School, where he graduated in 1988.
