Biography

The Hon. Chiaka N. Ihekwaba is a judge for the Miami-Dade County Court in Florida. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on June 24, 2020, filling a vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Lody Jean to the Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.

Prior to her appointment, Ihekwaba was an assistant state attorney in the Office of the State Attorney for the Eleventh Judicial Circuit, a position to which she was named in 2001. During her tenure there, she held assignments as Chief of the Felony Division as well as a member of the Organized Crime Unit.

Ihekwaba earned an LL.B. from the Nigerian Law School and an LL.M. in international business law from King's College London (1991). She then completed a J.D. at St. Thomas University College of Law in 2001.

Her memberships have included the Gwen Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association, the Cuban American Bar Association, the National Black Prosecutors Association, the Dade County Bar Association, and the National Association of Women Judges.

Ihekwaba was a resident of Miami, Florida, at the time of her appointment. She and her husband have five children.
