Biography

The Hon. Catherine Torres-Stahl is a judge for the 175th District Court in Bexar County, Texas. She was elected to the bench in 2016 and re-elected in 2020.

Prior to her election, Torres-Stahl was general counsel for the Bexar County Community Supervision and Corrections Department, a position to which she was named in 2013. Before that, she spent time as an attorney at Gonzales & Torres-Stahl, where she represented clients in criminal and family law matters (2011 to 2013), and a judge for the 144th District Court of Texas (2007 to 2010).

Torres-Stahl earned a bachelor’s degree in English communication arts from St. Mary’s University in 1988. She then completed a J.D. at St. Mary's University School of Law in 1993.

After graduating from law school, Torres-Stahl began her legal career as an assistant district attorney with the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office. During her tenure there, she held assignments in the Family Violence Unit, the Appellate Section, and the Juvenile Section. Then, in 1997, she entered into private practice as an associate at Scott Jones & Associates, supplementing her practice with service as a municipal judge for the City of San Antonio Municipal Court.

Her memberships have included the Hispanic National Bar Association Judicial Council, the Mexican American Bar Association, the San Antonio Bar Association, and the Texas Probation Association. She has also been involved with the Texas Commission on Children & Families, Healthy Futures of Texas, Hispanas Unidas, and the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center.

She was named Latina Judge of the Year by the Hispanic National Bar Association (2010), and she is a recipient of the Legal Profession Award from the Mexican American Bar Association.

Raised in San Antonio, Texas, Torres-Stahl attended Fox Tech High School.

She is registered as a Democrat.
