Biography

The Hon. Carole K. Bellows (Ret.) served as a judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. Bellows was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court in 1986. She retired in 2018.

While on the bench, Bellows held an assignment in the Domestic Relations Division.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Illinois in 1957. Bellows then completed a J.D. at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law in 1960. She was admitted to practice in Illinois (1960) and the Supreme Court of the United States (1975).

After graduating from law school, Bellows began her legal career as a law clerk for the Illinois Court of Claims. She then entered into private practice, where she worked until her appointment to the bench.

Her memberships have included the Bill of Rights Committee of the Illinois State Bar Association, the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association, and the American Bar Foundation. She served as president of the Illinois Bar Association, becoming the first woman to serve as president of a state bar association.

She is a recipient of the Maurice Weigle Award for Outstanding Service to the Organized Bar from the Chicago Bar Foundation (1970), the Medallion of Honor from the University of Illinois Mother’s Association (1975), the Samuel S. Berger Award from the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (2007), the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Decalogue Society of Lawyers (2008), the Distinguished Service Award from the Illinois Judges Association (2013), and the Legal Luminary Award from the Illinois Bar Foundation (2018).

Born and raised in Chicago, Bellows is the daughter of two attorneys. Her father worked as a labor attorney, gaining notoriety for his representation of John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers.
