Biography

The Hon. C. William Barrett is an associate justice for the Essex County Superior Court in Massachusetts. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Charlie Baker on December 7, 2016, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Bonnie H. MacLeod.


Barrett earned a bachelor’s degree from Brown University in 1983. He spent the next several years working on the corporate institutional bond trading desk at Prudential Bache Securities. He then completed a J.D. at Boston University School of Law in 1988.


After graduating from law school, Barrett began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office. He then entered into private practice in 1990. He worked as a partner at Esdaile, Barrett, Jacobs & Mane, specializing in tort law and contract disputes as well as criminal defense matters.


His memberships have included the American Board of Trial Advocates, the Massachusetts Academy of Trial Attorneys, the Middlesex County Bar Association, and the American Association of Justice. He also sat on the Concord Zoning Board of Appeals (chairman).


Barrett was born in Boston, Massachusetts.
