Judge Brad D. Schimel - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Brad D. Schimel is a judge for the Waukesha County Circuit Court of Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Scott Walker in 2019.

Prior to his appointment, Schimel was the Attorney General for the Wisconsin Department of Justice, a position to which he was named in 2014.

Schimel earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1987. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1990.

After graduating from law school, Schimel began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Waukesha County District Attorney’s Office. He served in that capacity until 2006, at which time he became the District Attorney for Waukesha County. During this time, he prioritized the fight against heroin and prescription opiate abuse, human trafficking, child abuse, and campus sexual assault.

His memberships have included the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of Public Lands, the Wisconsin Judicial Council, and the Wisconsin Crime Victim Council. He has also taught in the Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Department at Waukesha County Technical College.

He is a recipient of the Wisconsin Professional of the Year Award from the Wisconsin Association of Victim and Witness Professionals.

Raised in Vernon, Wisconsin, Schimel attended Mukwonago High School. He and his wife, Sandi, have two daughters. The family attends St. Anthony on the Lake Parish. When not presiding over legal matters, he is a Harley-Davidson enthusiast and a bassist for a classic rock band.

He is registered as a Republican.
