Judge Bernice D. Siegal - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Bernice D. Siegal (Ret.) was a justice of the Queens County Supreme Court (Civil Term) in the Eleventh Judicial District of New York. She was elected to the Supreme Court in 2009. Siegal retired in 2020.

She began her judicial career as a judge for the Civil Court of the City of New York in Queens County in 2002. During her tenure on the Civil Court, Siegal was appointed to serve as its supervising judge by former Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 2007.

Siegal received a B.A. from the City University of New York at Queens College in 1972. She also earned an M.P.A. from the New York University, Graduate School of Public Administration in 1979. She went on to complete a J.D. at New York Law School in 1985.

Prior to obtaining her law degree, Siegal worked as the assistant director at the Lincoln Medical & Mental Health Center (1978 to 1979) and as the assistant director for Clinical Affairs at Albert Einstein College of Medicine (1979 to 1985).

After law school, Siegal briefly practiced at Epstein, Becker and Green (1985 to 1986) and with Ronald Rosenberg (1986 to 1987) before becoming an associate at the law office of Robert Katz in 1987. She remained in that capacity until becoming an associate and counsel with the New York City Council in 1990.

Her memberships included the New York City Board of Civil Court Judges, the National Association of Women Judges, New York State Chapter (board member), the Queens Women’s Bar Association (recording secretary), and the Brandeis Association (chairwoman).
