Biography

Hon. Benjamin A. Chavez is a judge for the 2nd Judicial District Court of New Mexico in Bernalillo County. He was elected to the seat in 2012.

While on the District Court, Chavez has held assignments in the Criminal Division (2012 to 2018) and the Civil Division (2018 to present). He began his judicial career as a judge for the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Court (Division 13) in 2004 and remained on its bench until joining the 2nd Judicial District Court in 2012. During that time, he also presided over the Metropolitan Court Homeless Court.

Prior to joining the bench, Chavez worked as an assistant district attorney in both Taos County and Bernalillo County and as an assistant city attorney for the City of Albuquerque. In addition, he handled criminal and civil law matters in private practice.

Chavez received a bachelor’s degree from the University of New Mexico. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of New Mexico School of Law in 1996.

He was a former board member of the District and Metropolitan Judges Association and was appointed to two committees by the New Mexico Supreme Court.

Chavez was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His father, the Hon. Ben Chavez, presided as a judge for the New Mexico Court of Appeals.

He is registered as a Democrat.
