Judge Barbara J. Stalder: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Barbara J. Stalder is a judge for the 280th District Court of Texas in Harris County. She was elected to the bench in 2018. Stalder lost her bid for re-election in 2022.

She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Houston. Stalder went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Houston Law Center in 2003. While a law student, she served in El Paso as a court-appointed special advocate.

After graduating from law school, Stalder received a fellowship with the non-profit organization Equal Justice Works (2003). She then worked in the Houston office for Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse. Stalder also taught at the University of Houston Law Center and worked as a supervising attorney in the civil clinic with victims of domestic violence.

She is Board Certified in Family Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

Her memberships included the State Bar of Texas Family Law Section, Animal Law Section, and Poverty Law Section. She also served as a member of the College of the State Bar of Texas, the Houston Bar Association Family Law Section, the Houston Bar Association Animal Law Section (co-chair), the Burta Rhoads Raborn Family Law American Inn of Court, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (Texas Chapter), the American Bar Association Family Law Section, and the Texas Young Lawyers Association Family & Children’s Rights Committee.

Stalder, who was born in Kansas City, Missouri, is married to, Fred, a retired pilot. She enjoys volunteering her time for various Houston animal rescue projects and rooting for the Kansas City Chiefs and the Houston Texans football teams. A survivor of domestic abuse, Stalder devoted her legal career to helping other victims.

She is registered as a Democrat.
