Biography

Hon. Avis Bishop-Thompson is a judge for the Vicinage 2 Superior Court in Bergen County in New Jersey. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Christie in 2017.

After her appointment, Bishop-Thompson initially presided in the Family Division until receiving an assignment to the Civil Division in 2019.

She received a B.A. in political science from Spelman College. Bishop-Thompson went on to complete a J.D. at Santa Clara University School of Law in 1987.

After graduating from law school, she began her legal career with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office before becoming an associate in the law firm of DeCotiis, FitzPatrick, Cole & Giblin, LLP. Bishop-Thompson was later named a partner in 2006.

At the firm, her practice focused on civil litigation, education, and labor law. Bishop-Thompson represented clients in both the public and private sectors, including K-12 and post-secondary institutions as well as management in collective bargaining negotiations, unfair labor practice proceedings, grievance arbitrations, interest arbitrations, and general labor counseling. In addition, her practice included employment matters ranging from agency investigations, consent decree compliance, discrimination, and wrongful termination matters.

Her memberships have included the Justice Morris Pashman American Inn of Court, the National Association of Women Judges (co-District III Director), and the Bergen County Bar Association.

Bishop-Thompson has also sat as a member of the New Jersey Supreme Court Committee on Security Risks to Judges and Court Staff Associated with Public Access to Personal Information.

She holds the distinction of being the second African-American judge in the history of Bergen County.
