Judge Asha F. Jackson - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Asha F. Jackson is a judge for the DeKalb County Superior Court in Georgia. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Nathan Deal in 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Michael E. Hancock.

Jackson is the founding and presiding judge of the felony mental health court in DeKalb County. She was instrumental in creating Project Pinnacle, a one-year mandatory in-court experience for non-violent offenders under the age of 25.

Prior to her appointment, Jackson was a partner at Barnes & Thornburg, where she specialized in commercial litigation in Atlanta. Before that, she handled tort litigation and professional negligence matters at Carlock, Copeland & Stair. Her most notable case includes the representation of NFL football player Ray Lewis in a civil suit arising out of two murders after the Atlanta Super Bowl.

Jackson earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Rochester in 1997. She then completed a J.D. at Tulane University Law School in 2000. She is admitted to practice in Georgia, the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia, and the United States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia.

After graduating from law school, Jackson began her legal career as a law clerk for the Hon. Michael Hancock of the DeKalb County Superior Court.

Her memberships have included the Atlanta Bar Association, the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, the Council of Superior Court Judges, the Statewide Judicial Council, and the Statewide Judicial Task Force. She also sits on the Executive Committee of the Statewide Council of Accountability Court Judges as its Mental Health Court representative, and she is a board member of the State Commission on Family Violence, the Atlanta Area Council of Girl Scouts, and the National Advisory Board of Forever Family.

She is a recipient of the Pinnacle Leadership Award from the Fortitude Educational and Development Education Center (2017), the Dream Makers Political Activism Award from the Atlanta Urban League Young Professionals (2014), and the Torch Leadership Award from the Atlanta Alumni Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
