Judge Anthony Donofrio - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Anthony Donofrio is a judge for the General Division of the Mahoning County Court of Common Pleas in Ohio. He was elected to the bench on November 6, 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Lou A. D’Apolito.

Prior to his election, Donofrio was an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office, a position to which he was selected in 2018.

Donofrio earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from Ohio State University. He spent the next few years working as a blood bank technician for the Youngstown Hospital Association before completing a J.D. at the University of Akron School of Law in 1990.

After graduating from law school, Donofrio began his legal career as an assistant prosecuting attorney for the Mahoning County Prosecutor’s Office. He served in that capacity for seven years, holding assignments in the Juvenile Division, the Criminal Division, and the Civil Division.

Donofrio then entered into private practice. He worked as an associate at Rossi & Rossi Co. as well as general counsel for B.J. Alan Company/Phantom Fireworks. Then, in 2011, Donofrio joined the City of Youngstown Law Department as a deputy law director.

His memberships have included the Board of Directors of Addiction Programs of Mahoning County and the Youngstown Board of Housing Appeals. He also sat on the Board of Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes and Meridian HealthCare, and he served as president of the Youngstown Playhouse as well as legal advisor to the West Side Citizens Coalition.

Born and raised in Youngstown, Ohio, Donofrio attended Ursuline High School. He is the third member of his family to become a judge. His father, the Hon. Joseph Donofrio (deceased), served as a judge for the Youngstown Municipal Court and the Ohio Seventh District Court of Appeals. His brother, the Hon. Gene Donofrio, is a judge for the Ohio Seventh District Court of Appeals.
