Biography

Hon. Andrew W. Roraback is the assistant administrative judge for the Waterbury Judicial District Superior Court in Connecticut. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Dannel Malloy in 2013.

Prior to joining the judiciary, Roraback had been a partner in the family law firm, Roraback & Roraback Law Firm, in Torrington since 1988. At the firm, he practiced alongside his father, brother, and sister. The firm was founded by his great-grandfather in 1883.

He also spent thirteen years as a senator in the Connecticut State Senate (30th District) (2000 to 2013) and was a former representative in the Connecticut House of Representatives (64th District) for six years (1994 to 2000). In the Senate, Roraback was elected Deputy Minority Leader Pre Tempore and Minority Caucus Chairman in 2007 and sat as a ranking member or senior member of the Environment; Finance, Revenue & Bonding; Judiciary; Executive and Legislative Nominations; and Regulatory Review Committees. During his eighteen years in the General Assembly, he held the distinction of being the only member to never miss a roll call vote and was the only Republican member to vote to repeal the death penalty in the state of Connecticut in 2009.

Roraback received a B.A. at Yale University in 1983. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Virginia School of Law in 1987.

After graduating from law school, Roraback began his legal career as an attorney in the New Haven office of Wiggin & Dana, LLP, though his time there was brief. He left the following year to join his family’s firm.

From a civic standpoint, Roraback has served on the Board of Directors of Torrington Affordable Housing, Inc., the Torrington Child Care Center, Inc., and the Yale Club of Northwestern Connecticut. He is also a past president of the Litchfield County University Club.

He was named the Family Legislator of the Year by the Connecticut Council of Family Service Agencies (2007) and received the GLADD Award (Government Leader Against Drunk Driving) from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (2004).

Roraback is the cousin of the late Catherine Roraback, a former Connecticut civil rights attorney who represented Estelle Griswold and Dr. C. Lee Buxton in the 1965 Supreme Court case, Griswold v. Connecticut, which legalized the use of birth control in the state and also established the precedent of the right to privacy.

He was born in Torrington, Connecticut, and attended public schools in Torrington and Litchfield. Roraback later served as the eleventh member of his family to graduate from The Hotchkiss School (1978), a boarding school attended by his family since 1951. He was also the eleventh member of his family to pass the Connecticut bar.

At the time of his appointment, Roraback resided in Goshen, Connecticut.
