Biography

Hon. Andrew Russell is a judge for the Maricopa County Superior Court in Arizona. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Ducey in 2021.

During his judicial tenure, Russell has held assignments in the Family, Civil, and Probate Courts.

Prior to his appointment, he presided for seven years as a commissioner of the Maricopa County Superior Court (2014 to 2021). During his tenure in that position, Russell served as a Special Assignment Commissioner.

Before that, he practiced as an attorney at Kutak Rock LLP (2006 to 2014), Lieberman, Dodge, Gerding & Anderson, Ltd. (2003 to 2005), and The Cavanagh Law Firm (2002 to 2003). His areas of practice included commercial and appellate litigation.

Russell received a B.A. in music from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1988. He then spent five years working as the music director for Big Bear Middle School (1993 to 1998) before completing a J.D. at Washington and Lee University School of Law in 2001.

After graduating from law school, Russell began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Noel Fidel with the Arizona Court of Appeals, Division 1 (2001 to 2002).

He has held memberships with the Arizona Women Lawyers Association and the Thurgood Marshall American Inn of Court (past president).

Russell also sat as a member of the Arizona Judges Association Executive Committee and the State Bar of Arizona’s Elder Law, Mental Health, and Special Needs Planning Executive Council.
