Biography

Overview

The Hon. Andrew B. Kendall is a judge for the Kern County Superior Court in California[1]. Kendall was appointed to the bench by Governor Gavin Newsom on November 10, 2021, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of John S. Somers[2].

His judicial work has included probate and criminal matters[2]. In Pearce v. Briggs, a contested probate matter he heard as a court commissioner, the Fifth District Court of Appeal affirmed the judgment in 2021[2]. In 2023, Kendall presided over competency proceedings in People of the State v. Harvey and found the defendant competent to stand trial[2].

Educational background

Kendall earned a B.A., cum laude, from Claremont McKenna College in 2000[2]. At the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, he completed a J.D. in 2003[3]. He was admitted to the State Bar of California (December 2003).

Career history

After graduating from law school, Kendall entered private practice as an associate at the civil litigation firm Pircher, Nichols & Meeks LLP (2003 to 2007), in Bakersfield[2]. He then joined Proskauer Rose LLP (2007 to 2009) as a litigation associate[2]. His work there included real estate matters. In 2009, Kendall transitioned to public service as a deputy public defender with the Office of the Kern County Public Defender and remained there until 2018[2]. He next served as a court commissioner for the Kern County Superior Court from 2018 to 2021[2].

Personal life

Outside the courtroom, Kendall has served as vice-president of the Kern County Law Library Board of Trustees[4]. His outreach work has also included hosting visiting legal scholars and participating in judicial education programs[2].
