Judge Allison M. McGahay: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Allison M. McGahay is a justice on the Essex County Supreme Court in the 4th Judicial District of New York. McGahay was elected to the Supreme Court bench on November 8, 2022.

The 4th Judicial District includes Clinton, Essex, Franklin, Fulton, Hamilton, Montgomery, Saratoga, Schenectady, St. Lawrence, Warren, and Washington counties.

Prior to her election, McGahay operated her own solo practice, a law firm she established in 2013. During that same time, she served as a commissioner on the Essex County Board of Elections (2013 to 2022) and as town attorney for the Town of Wilmington (2017 to 2022). Before that, McGahay worked for three years as an assistant district attorney with the Office of the Essex County District Attorney (2009 to 2012).

She received a B.A. in public justice from the State University of New York at Oswego in 2001. McGahay then completed a J.D. at Albany Law School in 2004. She was admitted to practice in New York (2005).

After graduating from law school, McGahay became an associate at Carter, Conboy, Case, Blackmore, Maloney & Laird, P.C. Two years later, in 2006, she left the private sector to join the New York State Board of Elections, where she worked as special counsel to the Deputy Director of Elections Operations. McGahay continued in that capacity until 2008. She also performed a stint as a judicial intern to Hon. Bud Malone on the Albany County Supreme Court.

She has sat on the board of directors of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and on the executive committee of the New York State Election Commissioners Association. McGahay has also been involved with the Northwood School Board of Trustees.

She resides in Lake Placid, New York, alongside her husband, Bill, where they are raising two children.

She is registered as a Republican.
