Judge Aicha Marie MacCarthy - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Aicha Marie MacCarthy is a judge for the Probate Division of the Cook County Circuit Court in Illinois. She was elected to the bench on November 6, 2012, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Dorothy F. Jones.

Over the course of her judicial career, MacCarthy has presided over Adult Guardianship Estates (2017 to present), Minor Guardianship (2015 to 2017), and Disabled Adult Estates (2014 to 2015). She has also held assignments in the First Municipal Division, where she heard traffic, DUI, evictions, and civil non-jury cases.

MacCarthy began her legal career as a prosecutor for the Traffic Division of the Chicago Law Department in 1998. Later that year, she transferred to the Chicago Housing Authority, where she served as a staff attorney and hearing officer until 2001. At that time, she became a financial planning analyst for the Chicago Department of Planning and Development.

In 2001, MacCarthy began serving as Assistant to the Mayor at the Office of the Mayor of Chicago. She worked in this capacity for three years, eventually leaving to become an Assistant Commissioner at the Chicago Department of Aviation. Then, in 2008, MacCarthy entered into private practice as a sole practitioner, handling probate, real estate, and criminal matters until her election to the bench.

MacCarthy is registered as a Democrat.
