Biography

The Hon. Abbey Fishman Romanek is a judge on the Circuit Court of Cook County in Illinois. Romanek was elected to the bench in 2014, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Barbara M. Meyer.

During her judicial tenure, she has held an assignment in the Domestic Relations Division.

Prior to her election, Romanek worked as an attorney in private practice, specializing in medical malpractice matters. She worked with several law firms, some of which included the Franklin Law Group and North Shore LAW. During that time, Romanek earned an AV-Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Before that, she spent three years as an assistant attorney general in the Medicaid Fraud Control Bureau of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

She received a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1981. Romanek then completed a J.D. at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law, in 1987. She was admitted to practice in Illinois (1987).

Romanek has served on the Village of Wilmette Zoning Board as well as the Executive Board of the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the Board of Connections for the Homeless.

She is the daughter of a Holocaust survivor. When her mother was sixteen years old, she obtained a Polish paper and learned the catechism in order to avoid the concentration camps. Her father, a Rabbi, worked in Massachusetts and the Displaced Persons Camps of Germany. He also ministered to the mentally ill as chaplain and chief chaplain at Chicago Read Mental Health Center.

She is registered as a Democrat.
