A meeting of the . CTFA Technical Administration Committee was held
on February 1, 1977 at the Old Towne Holiday Inn in Alex~ndria,
Virginia. Members of the Committee present were:

Dr. Giovacchini opened the meeting and had the participants
introduce themselves. Dr. Giovacchini, in his opening remarks,
stressed the importance in maintaining a dialogue among scientists
on scientific issues to promote. mutual respect for points of
view. He then proceeded with the agenda.

prepared explaining to consumers the state of research.
Dr. Menkart agreed this was a good suggestion and will study
the matter further. It was agreed the dialogue in this
area must continue.
4. Talc -~ Dr. Estrin reported publication of a new CTFA
Standard for talc and distributed copies to FDA. He described
a round-robin test of cosmetic tales which have been recently
purchased on the open market. Participants in the round-robin
test include scientists from Mt. Sinai Hospital and the Food
and Drug Administration. Mr. Henry Davis reported on FDA's
work on methodology and described the comparison between the
CTFA method·and FDA's method as follows:

Dr. Estrin noted that FDA had been invited to participate at
meetings CTFA has with the Mt. Sinai group and noted the
desirability .of FDA participation in the future. Dr. Marzulli
reported on papers showing cancer from glass fibers and
suggested that possibly shape was more important than the
type of particle. Dr. Giovacchini responded the work referred
to was not new in the scientific literature. Mr. Wenninger
updated the Committee briefly on the National Bureau of
Standards work on talc exposures.
5. Aerosols -- Dr. Gressel described the propellant program
undertaken by the Inter-Industry Aerosol Safety Committee and
current work by a Hydrocarbon Subcommittee which is combining
