Biography

Hon. William J. Richards (Ret.) was a judge for the Forty-Sixth District Court of Michigan in Oakland County. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jennifer Granholm in 2007. Richards retired in 2015.


Prior to his appointment, he was a senior policy advisor to the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality. Richards also taught as an adjunct professor at Cooley Law School.


Before that, he was a deputy attorney general with the Michigan Department of Attorney General (1999 to 2002) and spent ten years as an Assistant United States Attorney (1989 to 1998).


Richards received an A.B. from the University of Michigan in 1969. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Michigan Law School in 1972.


He was admitted to practice in Michigan (1972), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (1972), and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit (1974).


Richards sat on the Oakland-Livingston Legal Aid Board of Trustees.


At the time of his appointment, he resided in Beverly Hills, Michigan. Richards has been a longtime member of First Congregational Church in Royal Oak.
