Biography

The Hon. William F. Highberger is a judge for the Los Angeles County Superior Court in California. He was appointed to the bench in 1998 by former Governor Pete Wilson. He filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Richard Harris (Ret.).

Judge Highberger received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1972. He went on to earn his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 1975. While at Columbia, he was a James Kent Scholar and served as editor of the Columbia Law Review.

After graduating from law school, Highberger joined the law firm Gibson, Dunn, and Crutcher LLP as an associate in 1976. He was made a partner in 1982. Highberger practiced labor and employment litigation at the firm's Los Angeles and Washington, D.C. offices. He remained with the firm until his appointment to the bench in 1998.

During his time on the Superior Court, Judge Highberger presided over the Complex Civil Litigation Program starting in 2008. His docket there included class actions, complex civil cases, derivative suits, and construction defect litigation cases. Starting in 2013, his docket shifted to mostly wage and hour class action lawsuits. Prior to his assignment to the Complex Civil Litigation Program, Judge Highberger presided over a fast-tracked general jurisdiction civil calendar. He has also been a member of the Court Facilities Advisory Committee and a member of the Courthouse Cost Reduction Subcommittee.

His memberships have included the American College of Business Court Judges and the American Law Institute. He was also named a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.

Judge Highberger is an avid speaker and has also contributed articles to several publications, such as the California Courts Review and the Daily Journal.

He is married to the Hon. Carolyn B. Kuhl, a Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge.
