The Hon. William C. McIlwain, III (Ret.) was a judge for the 16A Judicial District Court of North Carolina. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jim Martin in 1989. McIlwain retired in 2014.
The 16A Judicial District includes Anson, Richmond, and Scotland Counties. He was appointed Chief District Court judge of the 16A Judicial District in 2007.
Prior to joining the bench, McIlwain was in private practice at Johnston & McIlwain in Laurinburg since 1980. Before that, he was associated with Walter Clark in Canton (1977 to 1980).
McIlwain received a bachelor’s degree from Davidson College. He then completed a J.D. at Wake Forest University School of Law. McIlwain was admitted to practice in North Carolina in 1977.
