The Hon. Von T. Nguyen Deroian is a judge for the Santa Barbara County Superior Court in California. She was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2018. She filled the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Rogelio R. Flores (Ret.).
She is a registered Democrat.
Judge Nguyen Deroian received her A.A. from Allan Hancock College. She went on to earn her J.D. from the Santa Barbara College of Law in 2006.
While in law school, Nguyen Deroian worked as a paralegal for three years at Hardin and Coffin LLP beginning in 2003. During her time there, she handled insurance defense, construction defense, and public entity cases.
After graduating from law school, she practiced as an associate at the firm briefly in 2006, until leaving to join the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office as a deputy district attorney. During her time at the D.A.'s office, Nguyen Deroian specialized in the prosecution of juvenile, sexual assault, and gang-related crimes cases. She remained at the D.A.'s office until 2017.
It was at that time that Nguyen Deroian was selected by the Santa Barbara County Superior Court judges to serve as a court commissioner. She would remain in that capacity until her appointment to the bench a year later. During her brief stint as a court commissioner, Nguyen Deroian presided over child-support cases prosecuted by the Department of Child Support Services, where she was tasked with traveling as a rotating judge for three different court locations.
She also served as an adjunct professor at the Santa Barbara College of Law and a volunteer for mock trial competitions in Santa Barbara County.
Judge Nguyen Deroian was born in Vietnam but was raised in Southern California.
