Judge Valter H. Must - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Valter H. Must is a judge for the Ocean County Superior Court (Vicinage 14) in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Chris Christie on July 3, 2017.

Must has held assignments in the Family Division (2017 to 2021) and the Civil Division (2021 to present).

Prior to his appointment, Must was a partner at Carluccio, Leone, Dimon, Doyle & Sacks, a firm he joined in 2012. Before that, he was a partner at Rothstein, Mandell, Strohm, Must & Halm (1986 to 2012). Must also spent time as a municipal prosecutor for the Township of Lakewood (2000 to 2013) and the Township of Manchester (2006 to 2013).

Must earned a bachelor’s degree in operations research from Syracuse University in 1978. He then completed a J.D. at Seton Hall Law School in 1985. He is certified by the Supreme Court of New Jersey as a Civil Trial Attorney, and he is admitted to practice in New Jersey (1985), New York (1986), the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey (1986), and the United States Supreme Court (1992).

After graduating from law school, Must began his legal career as a law clerk for the Ocean County Superior Court (1985 to 1986).

His memberships have included the Ocean County Bar Association (president), the American Association for Justice, the American Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and the Lakewood Estonian Association (president). He also sat on the New Jersey Superior Court Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel and the New Jersey Supreme Court District IIIA Ethics Committee.

He was named Young Lawyer of the Year by the Ocean County Bar Association (1995).

Born in Lakewood, New Jersey, Must was raised in Toms River. He attended the Ranney School in Tinton Falls. He has resided in Toms River with his wife, Eva, and their four sons. Must identifies as Lutheran, and he enjoys outdoor activities, including skiing and golfing.

He is registered as a Democrat.
