Judge Tom C. Gillert: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Tom C. Gillert (Ret.) served as a district judge for the Oklahoma Fourteenth Judicial District. Gillert was elected to the bench in 1994. He retired at the conclusion of his term on January 11, 2015.


Prior to his appointment, Gillert was an assistant district attorney for the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office, a position to which he was named in 1980. During this time, he participated in the death-penalty trial of Gary Alan Walker.


Gillert earned a bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma City University in 1971. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Tulsa College of Law (1974) and an LL.M. in tax litigation at the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law (1981).


After graduating from law school, Gillert began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office. He worked in that capacity for a few years, eventually leaving to perform a short stint in private practice. Then, in 1976, he became counsel for Phillips Petroleum.


Born and raised in Oklahoma, Gillert is the son of a petroleum geologist. He is a veteran of the Vietnam War.
