Judge Timothy L. Virkler: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

Biography

The Hon. Timothy L. Virkler is a surrogate on the Jefferson County Surrogate’s Court in the 5th Judicial District of New York. Virkler was elected to the Surrogate’s Court bench on November 5, 2024, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of Hon. Eugene Renzi.


The 5th Judicial District includes Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties.


Prior to his election, Virkler worked for fourteen years as a court attorney and law clerk with the Jefferson County Surrogate’s Court, a position to which he was named in 2006. Before that, he spent time as an assistant district attorney with the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office (2003 to 2006) and as a county attorney with the Lewis County Court Multi-Bench (2002).


Virkler received a B.A. from American University in 1998. He then completed a J.D. at Albany Law School in 2001. He was admitted to practice in New York (2002).


Virkler has served as an adjunct instructor in the Paralegal Program at Jefferson Community College.


He is a past president of the Lewis County Bar Association and the Jefferson County Bar Association. Virkler is also a past president of the Sunrise Rotary Club and has sat as a board member of the Samaritan Medical Center, the Fort Drum Regional Health Planning Organization, and Transitional Living Services of NNY.


He is a native of Lowville, New York.


He registered as a Republican.
