Judge Thomas J. McAdams - Professional Background & Legal Expertise

Biography

Hon. Thomas J. McAdams is a judge for the Milwaukee County Circuit Court in the First Judicial District of Wisconsin. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Scott Walker in 2013, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Jean DiMotto (Ret.).

McAdams has held an assignment in the Family Division.

Prior to his appointment, he was a commissioner and former acting chairperson of the Wisconsin Tax Appeals Commission, a position to which he was appointed by former Governor Jim Doyle in 2008.

Before serving in that capacity, McAdams spent twenty years as an assistant district attorney with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office (1987 to 1997 and 1999 to 2007). During his tenure there, he served as legal director of the Milwaukee Metro Drug Enforcement Group and was captain of the Misdemeanor Team. McAdams also held an assignment in the Misdemeanor and Traffic Group.

In between his time as a prosecutor, he had a brief stint in private practice at Reinhart, Boerner, Van Deuren, Norris & Rieselbach, S.C. (1997 to 1998).

McAdams received a B.A. in political science and government from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. He went on to complete a J.D. at the University of Wisconsin Law School (1987) and an LL.M. in taxation at DePaul University College of Law (1997).

He was admitted to practice in Wisconsin (1987), the United States District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Wisconsin (1987), the United States Court of Clams (1997), and the United States Tax Court (1997).

His memberships have included the Milwaukee Bar Association. McAdams has sat on the State Bar Appellate Practice Board (past treasurer), the Misdemeanor Long Term Planning Group, the Park Safety Task Force, and Governor Thompson’s Task Force on Highway Safety.

He spent several years as an instructor for the Sheriff’s Training Academy (1992 to 2004).

McAdams attended Milwaukee Custer High School. He and his wife have two grown children.
