Charping supplemented his construction business with an extensive farming operation. At one time, the family owned 150 brood cows on the Metasville acreage and on leased hayfields all over the county.
His memberships have included the Wilkes County Board of Tax Assessors.
He and his wife, Donna, have one son and one daughter. The family attends Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Charping is an active deacon and chairman of the building and maintenance committee and the cemetery committee. They reside in the homeplace where his mother was raised.
