The Hon. Thomas Carlson (Ret.) was a judge for the Vermont Superior Court. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Peter Shumlin on July 29, 2015, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Linda Levitt. Carlson retired in 2023.
Carlson held an assignment in the Family Division in Chittenden County.
Prior to his appointment, he was in private practice at Langrock, Sperry & Wool, LLP since 1984, where his practice included family law, general litigation, and business matters. He also handled mediation, having been trained as a mediator at Harvard Law School and the Center for Dispute Resolution.
Before joining the firm, he served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Albert Coffrin with the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont and was an investigator at Sessions, Keiner & Dumont and a paralegal for Vermont Legal Aid.
Carlson received a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College. He then completed a J.D. at George Washington University School of Law.
Carlson co-chaired the Access to Justice Coalition through the Vermont Bar Foundation and is a past chair of the St. George Selectboard and the Vermont Youth Orchestra Board. He has also been involved with the boards of Mercy Connections and the Vermont Young Writers Project.
He and his wife reside in Hinesburg. They have two sons.
