The Hon. Susan Piel is a judge for the Denton County Criminal Court No. 2 in Texas. She was elected to the bench in 2018 and re-elected in 2022.
Prior to her election, Piel was the owner of Piel Law, a firm she established in 2012. Before that, she spent time with the Denton County District Attorney’s Office, serving as a felony prosecutor (2005 to 2007) and Chief of the Misdemeanor Division (2007 to 2012).
Piel earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from Baylor University in 1992. She then completed a J.D. at Texas Tech University School of Law in 1995.
After graduating from law school, Piel joined the Denton County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. She started as a family violence prosecutor, rising through the ranks to become Chief of the Family Violence Unit. Piel worked in that capacity until 2003, at which time she entered into private practice at Piel & Piel.
Her memberships have included the Denton County Conservative Coalition, the Denton County Republican Lincoln Council, and the Denton Republican Women’s Club. She has also been involved with the Denton County Children’s Advocacy Center, the Young Men’s Service League, the Cumberland Children’s Home, and the North Texas Food Bank.
Born and raised in Carrollton, Texas, Piel attended Newman Smith High School. She currently resides in Argyle alongside her husband, Cary, and their three children. They attended the Argyle United Methodist Church.
She is registered as a Republican.
