Hon. Sue-Ellen Hantman (Ret.) was an associate judge for the Howard County District Court (District 10) in Maryland. She joined the bench in 2003. Hantman retired on April 11, 2015.
During her judicial tenure, she sat on the District Court of Maryland Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee, the Joint Committee on Parole Issues, and the Re-Entry and Best Practices’ Ad Hoc Committee on Sentencing Alternatives.
Prior to joining the bench, she was in her second stint as an assistant state’s attorney in Howard County (1995 to 2003). She first joined the office as an assistant state’s attorney in 1980 and held the position for nine years. In between that time, Hantman managed her own private solo practice (1989 to 1994).
She received a B.A. in sociology from Fairleigh Dickinson University in 1966. Hantman went on to complete a J.D. at Rutgers Law School in 1969.
Her memberships included the American Bar Association, the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association (Board of Governors), the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland, the Howard County Bar Association (past president), and the James McGill Inn of Court (past president and administrator).
Hantman was also involved with the Howard County Democratic Committee (chair), the Howard County Community Building Organization (Board of Directors), and the National Council of Jewish Women (past president).
She was named the Citizen Planner of the Year by the Maryland Citizen Planners Association and received the Senator James Clark Award from the Maryland Democratic Party (1995).
After leaving the bench, Hantman became of counsel in the Law Offices of Mark J. Muffoletto, LLC.
