The Hon. Stuart A. Minkowitz is a judge for the Morris/Sussex County Superior Court (Vicinage 10) in New Jersey. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jon Corzine on January 10, 2008.
Minkowitz has held assignments in the Family Division (2008 to 2011) and the Criminal Division (2011 to 2015) of the Morris/Sussex County Superior Court. He currently sits as the Assignment Judge for Morris County and Sussex County.
Prior to his appointment, Minkowitz was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Office of the United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey (1998 to 2007). During his tenure there, he was the Civil Health Care Fraud Coordinator.
Minkowitz earned a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany in 1988. He then completed a J.D. at the Brooklyn Law School in 1992.
After graduating from law school, Minkowitz began his legal career as an assistant prosecutor for the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office. He supplemented his work with service as a special deputy attorney general for the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General. Then, in 1996, he entered into private practice, working as an associate at Cole, Schotz, Forman & Leonard, Hackensack.
His memberships have included the Conference of Criminal Presiding Judges and the Conference of Drug Court Judges.
Minkowitz is a veteran of the United States Army Reserve and the New Jersey Army National Guard Judge Advocate General’s Corps. (1999 to 2008). He conducted legal reviews of administrative actions and policies, acted as legal advisor to administrative hearing boards, and provided legal assistance to soldiers and their families.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Minkowitz was a resident of East Hanover, New Jersey, at the time of his appointment. He is a third-generation judge. His uncle and his grandfather served as a federal judge and an administrative law judge respectively. When not presiding over the bench, he enjoys traveling, spending time with his family, and coaching his children in basketball and soccer.
