The Hon. Steven R. Sanders is a judge for the Superior Court of San Benito County in California. He was elected to the bench in 2000.
Sanders earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis, where he majored in mass communications (with an emphasis in sociology) and minored in environmental science and Spanish. He then completed his J.D. at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law in 1983.
He began his legal career as a law clerk for a personal injury firm in Sacramento. Then, after graduating from law school, he joined Rusconi, Foster, Thomas & Pipal as an associate, where he prosecuted dependency cases and handled planning matters for San Benito County. Four years later, he was appointed to serve as county counsel for the Office of County Counsel of San Benito County. He worked in that capacity until his election to the bench.
Sanders was born in Salinas, California, where he attended Salinas High School. As a child, he worked alongside his parents, picking stray sugar beets.
When not presiding over cases, Sanders is a member of the Hollister Flashbacks, a singing group that specializes in doo-wop songs. He also enjoys woodworking.
