Hon. Stephen M. Isherwood is an associate judge for the Rhode Island District Court. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Donald Carcieri on October 22, 2010, filling the vacancy created by the elevation of the Hon. Jeanne E. LaFazia to Chief Judge of the District Court.
At the time of his appointment, Isherwood was an attorney in the law firm of Schreiber & Schreiber, P.C., where he specialized in litigation, civil, criminal, and domestic violence law in Probate, Superior, Family, and District Courts. Before joining the firm in 1994, he was an attorney in the Law Offices of John L. Cosentino. He also presided as a probate judge for the City of Warwick (2005 to 2010).
Isherwood received a B.A. (1982) and an MSEd. (1985) from Elmira College. He went on to complete a J.D. at New England Law in 1988. Isherwood was admitted to practice in Rhode Island in 1989.
His memberships included the Rhode Island Bar Association, the American Bar Association, and the Rhode Island Trial Lawyers Association.
His civic involvement included the Advisory Board for the Protection of Children and Young People, the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials (former chairperson), and the Elmira College Alumni Association (past board member).
Isherwood, who was born in Providence, Rhode Island, is a graduate of Pilgrim High School (1978). He and his wife, Mary, have two children. Isherwood served as a lector and member of the Parish Finance Council and Parish Education Board for St. Peter’s Church in Warwick.
