Hon. Stephannie N. Stiel is a judge for the East Central Judicial District of North Dakota. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Doug Burgum in 2017, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Norman Anderson (Ret.).
The East Central Judicial District includes Cass, Steele, and Traill Counties.
Prior to her appointment, Stiel spent the bulk of her legal career as an attorney at Conmy Feste, Ltd. in Fargo. A shareholder in the firm, she began practicing there in 2004, and her areas of practice included civil litigation and employment law. Before joining the firm, Stiel was a judicial law clerk for the North Dakota Supreme Court (2003 to 2004).
She received a B.A. in criminal justice and psychology from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 2000. Stiel went on to complete a J.D. at the University of North Dakota School of Law in 2003.
She was admitted to practice in North Dakota (2003), Minnesota (2004), the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota, and the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota.
Stiel was president of the Cass County Bar Association and the Ronald N. Davies Inn of Court. She also sat on the Board of Governors of the North Dakota Association for Justice and is the founding member of the North Dakota Chapter of Hands & Voices, an organization that provides assistance to families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Stiel was born and raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She and her husband, Tom, reside in West Fargo with their four children.
