Judge Sophia Gatewood Crawford: Professional Background and Legal Expertise

The Hon. Sophia Gatewood Crawford is a judge for the 16A Judicial District Court of North Carolina. She was appointed to the bench by Governor Roy Cooper in 2018, filling the vacancy created by the retirement of the late Hon. Lisa Thacker.

The 16A Judicial District includes Anson, Richmond, and Scotland Counties.

Prior to her appointment, Crawford spent seventeen years as a trial attorney in private practice. Before that, she worked for five years as a senior assistant district attorney for the 20th Judicial District. Crawford began her legal career as an associate at Poisson, Poisson, Bower & Clodfelter in Wadesboro.

She received a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Crawford then completed a J.D. at Wake Forest University School of Law in 1995.
