The Hon. Ronald Giles is a judge for the 36th District Court of Michigan. He was re-elected to the bench on November 3, 2020.
Over the course of his judicial career, Giles acquired national attention when he remanded Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick to the Wayne County Jail for violating the terms of his bond. Kilpatrick, who had been charged with perjury, misconduct, and obstruction of justice, took an unauthorized trip to Windsor, Ontario.
Giles earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Wayne State University. He spent the next few years working in various therapeutic and social work positions before completing a J.D. at Wayne State University Law School.
After graduating from law school, Giles entered into private practice, where he specialized in juvenile, criminal, family, immigration, and civil rights matters. He supplemented his practice with service as a hearing referee for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights as well as general counsel for a community mental health organization.
Giles was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, and graduated from Cass Technical High School. He is a veteran of the United States Army, having served as a medical corpsman and a neuropsychiatry specialist. He and his wife, Joyce, attend New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
