Hon. Robert J. Tornatta (Ret.) was a judge for the Vanderburgh County Superior Court in Indiana. He was appointed to the bench by former Governor Frank O’Bannon in 1997. Tornatta retired on April 3, 2020.
Prior to his appointment, he was a magistrate with the Vanderburgh County Superior Court, having been appointed to the position in 1995. Tornatta first joined the Court as its administrator in 1991. Before that, Tornatta was in private practice, first at Trimble & Jewel (1988 to 1990), before practicing alongside Phil Hayes (1990 to 1991).
He received a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in 1982. Tornatta went on to complete a J.D. at Indiana University Maurer School of Law. He was admitted to practice in Indiana in 1985.
After graduating from law school, Tornatta began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Gene Brooks with the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana in 1986.
His father worked as an Evansville Police officer. Tornatta and his wife, Sharon, have three children.
