The Hon. Robert E. Long, Jr. is a judge for the Florida First District Court of Appeal. He was appointed to the bench by Governor Ron DeSantis on June 10, 2020, filling a seat vacated by the retirement of the Hon. James R. Wolf.
Prior to his appointment, Long was a judge for the 2nd Judicial Circuit Court of Florida, a position to which he was named by former Governor Rick Scott in 2016. He held assignments in Leon County, presiding over cases in the Criminal Division.
Long earned a B.S. in finance from the Florida State University College of Business. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Florida, Fredric G. Levin College of Law. He was admitted to the Florida Bar in 2008.
After graduating from law school, Long began his legal career as a judge advocate with the United States Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps. He served in that capacity until 2013, at which time he entered into private practice as an associate at Rumberger, Kirk, & Caldwell. Then, in 2014, he became general counsel for the Leon County Sheriff's Office, where he oversaw the operations of the Legal and Professional Service Division.
His memberships have included the Tallahassee Bar Association, the Tallahassee Legal Aid Foundation, the William H. Stafford American Inn of Court, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Rotary Club of Florida, and the Economic Club of Florida.
Long and his wife have four sons. When not presiding over legal proceedings, he leads the children's Sunday School at his local church.
