Biography

The Hon. Robert E. Grossman is a judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of New York. He was appointed to the bench by the judges of the United States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit on April 18, 2008, and re-appointed on April 18, 2022.


Prior to his appointment, Grossman worked as an attorney in private practice at Duane Morris, specializing in corporate law, business reorganization, and civil litigation matters. He also acquired extensive experience in complex bankruptcy and creditor rights litigation, representing both individuals and institutions in the restructuring and transferring of assets through the bankruptcy court.


Grossman earned a bachelor’s degree from Rider University in 1970. He then completed a J.D. at Brooklyn Law School in 1973. He is licensed to practice in New York (1974) and the United States District Court for the Southern, Eastern, and Northern Districts of New York.


After graduating from law school, Grossman began his legal career with the Division of Enforcement at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. He subsequently founded a large financial services company, which was tasked with acquiring and operating distressed assets. He served as its general counsel for the next several years, eventually leaving to enter into private practice at ArentFox Schiff.


His memberships have included the American Bar Association and the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges.
