Biography

The Hon. Robert C. Chambers is a judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. He was nominated to the bench by President Bill Clinton on June 5, 1997, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Elizabeth V. Hallanan. The United States Senate confirmed his appointment on September 5, 1997.


Chambers served as Chief U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of West Virginia (2012 to 2017).


Prior to his nomination, he was a longtime private practice attorney in Charleston (1977 to 1978; 1978 to 1997). Chambers also briefly served as legal counsel to the West Virginia State Senate (1978) and was a former state delegate in West Virginia (1978 to 1996).


He received a bachelor’s degree from Marshall University in 1974. Chambers then completed a J.D. at West Virginia University College of Law in 1977.


He was born in Williamson, West Virginia.
