The Hon. Richard M. Weinberg is an acting justice for the New York County Supreme Court (Criminal Term) in the First Judicial District of New York. He was designated to the bench by Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman in 2006.
Weinberg was initially appointed to the Criminal Court of the City of New York by former Mayor Rudy Giuliani in 2000 and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg in 2008. Then, in 2006, he was named presiding judge of the Midtown Community Court. He held that position until 2012.
Prior to his appointment to the bench, Weinberg served as general counsel to Speaker Peter F. Vallone of the New York City Council from 1989 to 2001. Before that, he worked as an assistant attorney general with the New York State Office of the Attorney General for eight years.
Weinberg began his legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Henry Bramwell of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York in 1975. Two years later, after the conclusion of his clerkship, he entered into private practice. He first worked as an associate at Arent, Fox, Kintner, Plotkin & Kahn from 1977 to 1979. He then moved to Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he worked as an associate until 1981.
He earned a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1967 and an M.A. from the New School for Social Research in 1972. He then completed a J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in 1974 and an LL.M. from New York University School of Law in 1978.
His memberships have included the New York State Bar Association, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, the New York County Lawyers Association, the Atlantic Theatre Company, and the Manhattan Theatre Club. He has also served on the Board of Directors of The Broadway Association, the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, and the City Center of Music and Drama.
He has taught as a faculty member of the New York State Judicial Institute and the Practising Law Institute as well as an adjunct professor at the City University of New York School of Law at Queens College, the New York Law School, and Yeshiva University, Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
