The Hon. Richard A. Stevens (Ret.) was an Associate Judge for the Illinois Circuit Court of Cook County. He was appointed to the bench by the Illinois Supreme Court in 1999, filling a vacancy created by the resignation of the Hon. Kenneth L. Gillis. Judge Stevens retired in 2021.
During his tenure on the bench, Stevens presided over cases in the Child Protection Division.
Stevens earned a B.B.A. from the University of Notre Dame in 1979 and completed his J.D. at the Duquesne University School of Law in 1982. He was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar in 1982 and the Illinois Bar in 1983. As a law student, he served as an associate editor for the Duquesne Law Review.
In 1984, Stevens joined the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office and held assignments in the Medical Litigation Division, the Felony Trial Division, and the Criminal Appeals Section. Prior to his appointment to the bench, he served as Chief of the General Litigation Division of the Civil Actions Division.
His memberships have included the Asian-American Bar Association and the Tort Litigation and Industrial Commission Committees of the Chicago Bar Association.
