Biography

The Hon. Peter A. Goldsmith is a magistrate for the 3rd Judicial District Court of Iowa. He was appointed to the bench by the Ida County Magistrate Nominating Commission in 2018, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of the Hon. Karla Henderson.


The 3rd Judicial District encompasses Buena Vista, Cherokee, Clay, Crawford, Dickinson, Emmet, Ida, Kossuth, Lyon, Monona, O'Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Sioux, and Woodbury counties.


Prior to his appointment, Goldsmith spent time as a magistrate for the 3rd Judicial District Court in Crawford County (2009 to 2017).


Goldsmith earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1977. He then completed a J.D. at the University of Iowa College of Law in 1980. He is licensed to practice in Iowa (1980), the District of Columbia (1981), and Maryland (1987).


After graduating from law school, Goldsmith entered into private practice, working as an associate at Wheatley & Wollesen in Washington, D.C. He subsequently moved his practice to Annapolis, Maryland, where he served as an associate at Wheatley & Ranquist. Then, in 1993, he became a partner at Boerner & Goldsmith.


His memberships have included the Iowa State Bar Association and the Ida County Bar Association.


He is a recipient of the Community Service Award for District 3B from the Iowa Supreme Court (2004, 2008).


Goldsmith is a widowed father of two children.
