Biography

The Hon. Patricia A. Sullivan is a magistrate for the United States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. She was appointed to the bench by the judges of the District of Rhode Island in 2012.


Sullivan has presided over the HOPE Court for the District since 2014.


Prior to her appointment, she was a longtime attorney at Edwards & Angell LLP in Providence (1978 to 2012). Sullivan also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Roger Williams University School of Law.


She received a bachelor’s degree from Wellesley College in 1973. Sullivan then completed a J.D. at Georgetown Law School in 1978. While a law student, she sat as an articles editor of the Georgetown Law Review.


She is a past president of the Board of Directors of the Rhode Island Chapter of the Federal Bar Association and co-chaired the Federal Bench/Bar Committee of the Rhode Island Bar Association and the District of Rhode Island Local Rules Committee. In addition, Sullivan served as a member of the boards of Rhode Island Kids Count, the Barrington Land Conservation Trust, and the Hasbro Children’s Hospital Advisory Committee.


She holds an AV rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
