Biography

The Hon. P. Gwynett Hilburn (Ret.) served as a judge for the 3A Judicial District Court of North Carolina. Hilburn was appointed to the bench by former Governor Jim Hunt in 1996. She retired in 2018.


The 3A Judicial District encompasses Pitt County.


Hilburn earned a bachelor’s degree (1969) and a master’s degree (1974) in music education from the University of South Florida. She spent the next few years teaching voice in the Episcopal and public school systems before completing a J.D. at Tulane University School of Law in 1981.


She is licensed to practice in Louisiana (1981), North Carolina (1983), the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, and the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina.


Hilburn relocated to North Carolina in 1983, when her husband, James C. Holte, a professor of English, was hired by East Carolina University.
