Biography

The Hon. Nathanael Cousins is a magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of California. He was appointed to the bench on July 5, 2012 to fill a seat vacated by the Hon. Bernard Zimmerman (Ret.).

Cousins earned a B.A. in political science from Stanford University in 1992. He then completed a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1995.

He began his legal career as an associate at Greenberg, Glusker, Fields, Claman & Machtinger in 1995. The following year, he accepted a clerkship with the Hon. F.A. Little, Jr. of the United States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana, where he served for one year. After his clerkship concluded, Cousins joined Kirkland & Ellis. He practiced there for the next six years, rising from associate to partner. During his tenure there, he specialized in civil and criminal litigation of civil rights, antitrust, class actions, securities fraud, and consumer fraud matters. He also served as a pro bono class counsel for the inmates of an Illinois state prison.

Then, in 2003, Cousins left the private sector and joined the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice. He served as an antitrust division trial attorney, prosecuting criminal antitrust cases for five years. One of his most notable cases involved the prosecution of global price-fixing cartels in memory chip markets. He then joined the Office of the United States Attorney as an assistant United States Attorney, where he served until his appointment to the bench.

When not presiding over cases, Cousins has taught antitrust, legal writing, and appellate advocacy at the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He has also coached basketball and soccer.

He was born in Palo Alto, California.

He is registered as a Democrat.
