Biography

The Hon. Nancy V. Alquist is a judge on the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland. She was appointed to the bench by the United States Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit on September 20, 2004.


Alquist earned a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975. She then completed a J.D. at Temple University, James E. Beasley School of Law, in 1978. She was licensed to practice in Pennsylvania (1978), Illinois (1988), and Maryland (1992).


After graduating from law school, Alquist began her legal career as an associate at Clark, Ladner, Fortenbaugh & Young in Philadelphia. She worked in that capacity until 1988, at which time she became a partner at Winston & Strawn in Chicago. Then, in 1992, she relocated her practice to Baltimore, where she was hired as a partner at Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll.


Her memberships have included the American Bar Association, the American Bankruptcy Institute, the Federal Bar Association, the Maryland State Bar Association, and the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the District of Maryland. She has also been involved with the International Judicial Academy, the International Women’s Insolvency and Restructuring Confederation, and the International Commercial Law Development Program of the United States Department of Commerce, and she has served on the board of Maryland SPCA.


Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Alquist was raised in Maine.
