The Hon. Nancy G. Edmunds (Ret.) is a senior judge for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. She was nominated to the bench by President George H.W. Bush on September 11, 1991, filling a seat vacated by the Hon. Richard Fred Suhrheinrich. The United States Senate confirmed her appointment on February 6, 1992. Edmunds assumed senior status on August 1, 2012.
Prior to her nomination, she was a partner at Dykema Gossett in Detroit since 1984. Edmunds, who joined the firm in 1978, served as a member of the firm's commercial litigation section and gained extensive trial experience in both state and federal courts.
She received a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University (1969) and a master’s degree in teaching from the University of Chicago (1971). Edmunds then completed a J.D. at Wayne State University Law School in 1976. While a law student, she sat as editor-in-chief of the Wayne Law Review.
After graduating from law school, Edmunds began her legal career as a law clerk to the Hon. Ralph Freeman with the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan in 1976, where she spent the next two years before transitioning into the private sector in Detroit.
Her memberships have included the Federal Judges Association, the American Judicature Society, the American Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the State Bar of Michigan.
Edmunds was born in Detroit, Michigan.
